Prague, Czech Republic, August 30th, 2024 – The first day of the GLOBSEC Forum 2024 concluded with the prestigious Thirteenth Czech and Slovak Transatlantic Award Ceremony. Held at Prague Castle under the auspices of Czech President Petr Pavel, this event is a key highlight of the Forum. During the evening, three exceptional individuals were recognized for their significant contributions to transatlantic relations and global security.
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, was honoured for her exemplary leadership in strengthening transatlantic ties and addressing global challenges. Her tenure as Germany’s Minister of Defence included significant military reforms, and as President of the European Commission, she has played a critical role in the EU’s response to the conflict in Ukraine. Von der Leyen has also reinforced the EU’s partnership with the United States, particularly in security and climate change initiatives.
“Ursula von der Leyen’s leadership has been vital in ensuring a unified and robust European response to some of the most pressing challenges of our time. Her dedication to fostering strong transatlantic ties has made the world a safer and more cooperative place,” commented Róbert Vass, President of GLOBSEC.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was also recognized for her exceptional leadership in shaping Denmark’s policies on social justice, security, and transatlantic relations. Notably, she has championed a unified European and transatlantic response to the Ukraine crisis and strengthened Denmark’s role within NATO and the EU. Her commitment to human rights, democracy, and collective security makes her a key figure in global politics.
“Prime Minister Frederiksen’s leadership during a time of crisis has been both inspiring and critical to the stability of our global community. Her commitment to transatlantic cooperation and collective security has set a powerful example for leaders around the world,” said Róbert Vass.
In addition, Martin Povejšil was posthumously honored for his extraordinary impact on Czech diplomacy. Joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1990, he played a crucial role in Czechia’s integration into NATO and the European Union. Povejšil served as the Czech ambassador to both NATO and the EU, where his expertise and dedication significantly shaped Czech foreign and security policy. Until his passing, he held the position of Director General for the Security and Multilateral Section at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire future generations of diplomats.
“Martin Povejšil’s unwavering commitment to advancing Czechia’s position among democratic nations was unparalleled. His work was instrumental in shaping the country’s role on the international stage, and his legacy will continue to guide Czech diplomacy for years to come,” commented Róbert Vass.
