Richard N. Gardner Professor, School of International and Public Affairs, Columbia University

Jan Švejnar is the Richard N. Gardner Professor of Economics and International Affairs and Director of the Center on Global Economy and Governance at Columbia University in New York City. He is also Co-Founder of the Center for Economic Research and Graduate EducationEconomics Institute (CERGE-EI) in Prague and chairman of the Executive and Supervisory Committee of CERGE-EI. He is a Member of the Forum 2000 Foundation Program Council and served as Economic Advisor to President Václav Havel (1994–2002). In 2008 Professor Švejnar was one of two candidates for President of the Czech Republic. He earned his MA and PhD in Economics at Princeton University.

Jan Švejnar was awarded the NEURON 2012 Prize for his lifetime achievement in Economics and received the 2015 IZA Prize in Labor Economics for his work on economic issues relating to labor, development and the transition from socialist to market economies. He is currently a members of the Strategy Committee of the European Economic Association and in his research he is examining (i) the effects of government policies on firms, labor and capital markets; (ii) corporate, national and global governance; and (iii) entrepreneurship, innovation and investment.
